Besides transverse springs and solid axles, the most common feature of the Ford - and of all Ford Motor Company vehicles before 1939 - was the lack of hydraulic brakes. Henry Ford was deeply suspicious of innovation he did not understand. He preferred the tried and true actuation by steel rods and levers to the new-fangled ‘juice’ brakes.

Today, a Ford with mechanical brakes will usually only come out for concours displays or car club runs. It will not be required to perform day to day transport for its lucky owners. Having said that, there’s no reason why you can’t boost its braking potential to the best that it was designed to be.
