Following the Battle of Britain, RAF Fighter Command went over to the offensive, carrying the flight for air superiority to the enemy-held coast of Europe. At the same time, the bulk of the Luftwaffe fighter force had been transferred to Russia or the Middle East, leaving only two German units for defense of France and the occupied countries.
