Jesus: King or Concierge? (A Study of Matthew) (Connect 360 Adult Bible Study Guides)
Are you familiar with the term “concierge?†It usually refers to an attendant or a caretaker (especially at a residence or hotel.) Perhaps you’ve enjoyed the services of a concierge when you have traveled. They can provide timely assistance in meeting the needs, wants, and desires of the guests under their care.
Unfortunately, people often treat Jesus as their personal concierge. They view him as someone who generally is not seen and is only wanted around when there is a problem to be solved or a need to be met. Other than those times, they would rather not be bothered by any demands Jesus might place on their lives. Some have referred to this practice as the “Jesus in my pocket syndrome,†where Jesus is only pulled out of the pocket if a crisis arises. Others claim that such practice treats Jesus more as a mascot than a master.
The Gospel of Matthew declares that Jesus Christ is not a concierge but a King who deserves our loyalty and obedience. The royalty of Jesus is demonstrated from the beginning of the Gospel: from Jesus’ lineage which proves him to be the Son of David, to the Magi who seek the King of the Jews, to the title of King that is mockingly added to the sign above the cross at his crucifixion.
This study of the Gospel of Matthew will reawaken us to the majesty of King Jesus. May the result of this awakening be fruitful lives actively involved in serving our King and completing his commission.
