60 Borders & Repeat Patterns â€“ 1 Alphabet â€“ 14 Motifs â€“ All charted on graph paper.These beautiful designs featuring classic motifs and borders are typical of the â€œnewâ€ lighter style that became popular in the second half of the 19th century. Small bookletsâ€“ in this instance, 3-1/2â€ by 5-1/4â€â€“ held accordion-pleated pages with patterns and alphabets and were sized to tuck into a needleworkerâ€™s bag. The patterns in this book are part of a series published by H. K. Berlin SW in Germany from the 1860s to the 1880s.Designs charted on graph paper are a universal language which can be translated into needlepoint, counted cross stitch and beadwork, with each square on the pattern representing a single stitch. These patterns can be worked in simple cross stitches and backstitches accented with the occasional Smyrna cross or Eyelet stitch (shown on page 32).
