Pickens&Glantz's Vulnerability to Drug Abuse
Drug Abuse affects everyone. Even those who do not use illegal drugs themselves may be directly affected through family or friends, and everyone is indirectly affected by the accidents, crimes and public health expenditures that are the inevitable consequence of drug abuse. In addition, the public risk for the spread of hepatitis, AIDS, and possibly other diseases is also a consequence of drug abuse. Despite the significant gains made in the last 5 years in combating drug abuse, the necessity for improving the efficacy of the available preventive interventions is clear. The meeting, held in November 1989, drew together a multidisciplinary group of leading drug abuse etiology researchers. The participants presented original data and reviewed and synthesized the literature; both the meeting and the collaboration with the APA were successful. That conference laid the ground work for this volume.
