Evangeline startled a little as a somewhat quiet bark drew her attention from the autumn vista before her and to a medium-sized brown dog that had suddenly appeared at her side. The dog stood panting happily, as if heâ€™d known her all her life, and it quite warmed Evangelineâ€™s heart.

â€œWell, arenâ€™t you a friendly little fellow?â€ she giggled as the dogâ€”who she quickly noticed was missing one hind legâ€”sat at her feet, wagging its tail and panting in joyous anticipation of attention.
Again Evangeline giggled. â€œArenâ€™t you just a handsome man? Yes, you are,â€ she said to the dog as she hunkered down and scratched behind his ears. She laughed when the dogâ€™s one hind leg began to beat the train platform as a signal of delight. â€œOh, you are a sweetheart, arenâ€™t you? I bet youâ€™re quite the Romeo in town too, hmmm?â€

â€œWell, well, well. If it isnâ€™t Evangeline Ipswich,â€ came a manâ€™s voice from behind her. â€œAnd I see youâ€™ve already won over Jones.â€

Evangeline felt goose bumps break over her entire body, for sheâ€™d instantly recognized the voice, even for the near six years it had been since sheâ€™d last heard it.
