40 Years Prospecting and Mining in the Black Hills of South Dakota (1921)

In this true first-hand account, long out of print and circulation, prospector Frank Hebert recounts his 40 years prospecting and mining the Black Hills of South Dakota, beginning in 1877. He also relates personal memories of mountain lion attacks, Indian raids, Buffalo Bill, Wild Bill, Ogalala Sioux, a Wounded Knee survivor, Red Cloud's band, outlaw Road Agents. Many of the scenes retold in this book occur in the Wild West mining camps such as Deadman's Gulch, Deadwood, Custer, and Lead. The author successfully located and mined gold and tin as well as other minerals in the Black Hills and provides great insight into the methods used by these early miners and their successes and failures along the way.
