The military ousted Argentinaâ€™s constitutional government in 1943. PerÃ³n, then an army colonel, was one of the coupâ€™s leaders, and he soon became the governmentâ€™s dominant figure as Minister of Labor. Elections carried him to the Presidency in 1946. He created the Partido Unico de la Revolucion, which became more commonly known as the PerÃ³nist or Justicialista Party (PJ). He aggressively pursued policies aimed at empowering the working class and greatly expanded the number of unionized workers. In 1947, PerÃ³n announced the first five-year plan based on the growth of industries he nationalized. He helped establish the powerful General Confederation of Labor (CGT). PerÃ³nâ€™s charismatic wife, Eva Duarte de PerÃ³n, known as Evita (1919-1952), played a key role in developing support for her husband.

Romulo S. Naon (1876-1941) was the Argentine Ambassador to the United States from 1910 to 1919. Juan A. Senillosa was the former Argentine Consul-General to Canada. Marrion Wilcox (1858-1926) was a geographer, historian, and American Spanish scholar. The U.S. Department of State is a federal executive department responsible for international relations of the United States.
