AmblesideOnline's Kipling Poems for Year 5 (annotated): AmblesideOnline Poetry: Year 5, term 1

Why read Kipling? Miss Charlotte Mason called poetry 'an instructor in conscience,' and Kipling does that well, but with a delightful rather than ponderous hand. He writes of the world as it was when he was in it, and he writes with a clear eye and ready wit. His poems speak of courage, duty, beauty, and pathos.
A young reader could do much worse than to take Kipling's poem 'If' for a life motto.
In an article published in 1952, Rev. Robert B. Gribbon said that 'Kipling is the most intelligent as well as the most frequent user of the Bible among the better-known English poets." He says he found nearly 500, if we include 48 references to the Psalter and 26 to other parts of the Prayer Book. (The Living Church, Volume 125).
That is intriguing, but we suggest one should read Kipling's poems because they are good reading.
This curated collection was selected and prepared by the Advisory at AmblesideOnline. These are poems we have read and recited with our own children (collectively we have 25, the oldest in her mid-30s), poems some of them are now reading to their children. We chose them because they inspired and appealed to many of our childrean, and we hope your family will be equally enriched by them.
