Assurance in the New Covenant

New Testament believers were assured, and as a consequence experienced ‘an inexpressible and glorious joy’ (1 Pet. 1:8). Today, however, many believers stumble on with a low level of assurance, if that. Some dare not even think about it; it is so painful. And they are not helped by their preachers – ‘household names’ among them – who tell them that they must struggle hard for assurance, but that most of them will never get it. If they turn to their Confessions, or many of the great teachers of the past, they find they speak with the same depressing voice.
David Gay argues that this is all wrong. By starting with experience, the Confessions or our system of theology, we are bound to find ourselves in trouble. For the believer, the right way, the only way, is to start with Scripture. And in this book, that is just what Gay does. He argues from Scripture to show that New Testament believers were assured, and he shows the scriptural way this was accomplished. But he also examines why some believers even in apostolic days lost their assurance, and how the apostles helped them recover their joy. So this book is both positive and negative: Gay sets out the scriptural position, exposes fault lines in wrong – but common – teaching, and points the way of recovery for any believer who is weltering in doubt.
If you are a believer this book should be of interest to you. It will instruct you, and, if you are lacking assurance, it might prove to be invaluable to you.
