Blame it on Texas: From Princess to Prairie (Kindle Worlds Novella)
Bobbi Jo Bentley, Jersey girl, law school dropout turned private investigator, is heading to Texas for her first assignment as a PI, because she’s aiming to show her controlling, critical, socialite mama she’s good at something besides having a pretty face—but mama’s angry because she fears once her circle of friends find out her daughter’s profession, she’ll be the laughing stock of the group. But Bobbi Jo doesn’t care about any of that stuff because, unlike her mama, she’s learned that money doesn’t buy happiness.
Excited about her assignment, she’s heard from a real Southern Belle that anyone who speaks with a twang has major distrust for Yankees—women in particular, because they're bossy, egotistical and 'know-it-alls, and if she’s going to ask for their help while in the small town of Silver Canyon, Texas, then she’d better pretend to be one of them. And that’s when she sets out to speak the language by purchasing a CD on How to Speak Southern and she’s practiced so much, her twang is as perfect as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich accompanied by a milk chaser. In addition, she claims to be from Georgia instead of New Jersey to heighten her authenticity as a downhome girl.
Her assignment is to find the illegitimate son of the wealthy Elizabeth Hawthorne, the heiress of the Five N Dime fortune who was given up for adoption without Elizabeth’s knowledge. In a race against time, Bobbi Jo must find him because Elizabeth is dying with only has six months to live, and her only wish is to meet him for the first time to tell him how sorry she is.
Along the way, Bobbi Jo meets Rusty Dawson, a hot looking cowboy who’s fallen head over heels for this little lady and the feeling is mutual. They have a whirlwind romance—you know, that love at first sight thing, and just as she’s about to meet his friends and go to a church supper, who shows up and demands she return home, but Bobbi Jo’s mama. When Bobbi Jo refuses, her mother spills the beans to Rusty, who overhears the confrontation. He can’t believe Bobbi Jo has lied to him and he runs in the opposite direction, refusing to answer her calls or texts. In addition to her heartbreak, she’s exhausted her resources to find the son, Elizabeth is hanging on by a thread, and she finally agrees with her mother—she is a failure. Now, the burning question is does she stay and fight for Rusty, or leave the greatest love she’s ever known behind.
