El Croquis 127: John Pawson

From the outset, the work of John Pawson has focused on exploring fundamental problems of space, proportion, light and materials in a search for an expression of simplicity which has been coined minimalist. For Pawson this minimalism 'is not an architecture of self-denial, deprivation or absence: it is defined not by what is not there, but by the rightness of what is and the richness with which that is experienced'. This edition surveys 17 of his architectural projects, including the 'Tilty Barn' in Essex, 'Pawson House' in London, the 'Monastery of Our Lady of Novy Dvur' in Bohemia and the recently completed 'Baron House' in Sweden. All projects are presented alongside texts, plans and photographs and are introduced with essays and a conversation between Pawson and Deyan Sudjic.
