Entertainment Law: Contemporary Cases (Litigator Series)

This casebook contains 131 federal court of appeals decisions and 10 Supreme Court opinions that address legal issues affecting the rights of artists, authors, performers and production companies. The decisions are organized by federal circuit with an additional section containing Supreme Court decisions. The cases span from 1995 to 2011.

We highlight four relatively recent decisions:

In Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Ass'n, 131 S. Ct. 2729 (2011) the Supreme Court strikes down a California law imposing restrictions on violent video games because the statute violates the First Amendment.

Gaylord v. US, 595 F. 3d 1364 (Fed. Cir. 2010) addresses the question whether the United States Postal Service made fair use of a sculptor's work when it issued a stamp featuring the Korean War Veterans Memorial.

Saregama India Ltd. v. Mosley, 635 F. 3d 1284 (11th Cir. 2011) involves a copyright dispute for infringing use of a song brought by a music production and distribution company.

Bouchat v. Baltimore Ravens Ltd. Partnership, 619 F. 3d 301 (4th Cir. 2010) addresses the copyright claim of an artist who designed an official logo for the Baltimore Ravens football team.
