The Marine Paras from the first three books - Mission Raise Hell, Battalion of the Damned, and the un-released third book - are disbanded from their units and used to form the combat nucleus of the newly formed 5th Marine Division. On February 19th, 1945, they land on Iwo Jima, the first US forces to fight on Japanese soil. Thirty-six days later, a composite battalion is all that remains to claim the island.
