Robert E. Lee, one of the most famous figures in American history, disappeared from public view after his surrender at Appomattox. He lived only five more years, but during that time he did more than any other man to heal the wounds left from the War between the States.

His forum was the presidency of the then nearly defunct Washington College. Lee created a model university and showed a still-divided nation how compassion, generosity and conciliation could heal.
