Love in the Time of Hurricanes, A Short Story

A young woman searches for love and inspiration in post-Katrina New Orleans.


For Avery Barfield, Hurricane Katrina isn’t the worst thing that’s ever happened to her. The worst thing occurs eighteen months later when Tom Callahan, her law partner and the man she’s been secretly in love with for years, tells her he’s leaving. As Avery struggles to rebuild her life in a city where people wait in line at the local pharmacy like revelers at a cocktail party, the world she knew is gone, and what’s left may not be enough to hold her.

But a chance encounter with a down-on-her-luck young woman causes her to reexamine her past and her dreams of the future, as both Avery, and the city she loves, struggle to recapture the joy of being alive.
