Matthew is translated and edited byÂ Â the late William Foxwell Albright, senior editorÂ Â of The Anchor Bible, and by C. S. Mann, dean of theÂ Â Ecumenical Institute Theology, St. Mary's SeminaryÂ Â and University,Â Â Baltimore.

Matthew is the most familiar of theÂ Â gospels, best known for its parables, miracleÂ Â narratives, and the long Sermon on the Mount. RecognizedÂ Â by the early Church as the most fittingÂ Â introduction to the New Testament, its special concern is toÂ Â announce Jesus as the fulfillment of the 0ldÂ Â Testament. Hence its emphasis on the Law, on ethicsÂ Â based on the traditional theology of the Covenant,Â Â and on the centrality of MessianicÂ Â hope.

This commentary sets the understanding ofÂ Â Matthew in the context of its author's own religiousÂ Â and secular background. Believing that the textÂ Â should be approached directly, the writers of theÂ Â commentary make constant use of the recentlyÂ Â discovered historical and linguistic evidence nowÂ Â available to elucidate it. This approach results inÂ Â placing Jesus firmly within the framework ofÂ Â ascertainable Jewish tradition in first-centuryÂ Â Palestine.

The writers hold that the claim ofÂ Â Jesus to fulfill the Law and not to abolish it mustÂ Â be taken seriously. They have therefore taken aÂ Â fresh look at the legal discussions inÂ Â Matthew. In the light of theirÂ Â examination, there emerges first a revaluation of the meaningÂ Â attached to such key words as "parables"Â Â and "hypocrite" and then a new and vitalÂ Â significance for such words.

TheÂ Â result is a new respect forÂ Â Matthew, a highly reliable early source for the ministryÂ Â of Jesus, and an examination of that ministryÂ Â uncluttered by the presuppositions of various forms ofÂ Â modern "Platonism."
