Mushrooms of the Great Lakes region;: The fleshy, leathery, and woody fungi of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and the southern half of Wisconsin and of Michigan
Originally published under the joint auspices of the Chicago Natural History Museum and the Chicago Academy of Sciences, this is the definitive coverage of the mushrooms of the Middle West, particularly the area around the Great Lakes. It is based in part on the Harper Herbarium and the collections of the Missouri Botanical Garden, supplemented by extensive field and museum work by the author and many others. Approximately 1,200 mushrooms are covered, including the fleshy Ascomycetes (Sphaeriales and Pezizales) adn fleshy and woody Basidiomycetes (Tremellales, Agaricales and Lycoperdales). Mushrooms are arranged according to botanical classification, with very detailed descriptions that are unusually precise. Habitat and geographical information are also included, with details of range, outside the area specified in the title, throughout the United States. Since most mushrooms are very widely spread, this book is thereby extremely useful for the entire Northern United States. In addition to the thorough text the author includes other aids: a series of finding keys to species level (with tribes where necessary) and 49 plates that illustrate very clearly more than 750 different mushrooms. Unlike practically all other studies on the level, which are selective, this is a complete coverage of mushrooms, with a clear, consistent treatment of doubtful varieties and classifications. It will enable you to identify any mushrooms you may find. Unabridged reprint of the 1944 edition. 49 plates. Dictionary of terms. Index.
