Oedipus Rex, the most famous of the ancient Greek tragedies, tells the story of how a man, seemingly blameless, can be guilty of terrible crimes, unknowingly committed, which demand his fall and punishment; a story which has fascinated countless philosophers and theorists, and inspired thousands of rewrites by subsequent authors. Its sequel, Oedipus at Colonus, tells the story of his final redemption.
