Rumors flew like rockets throughout the guerrilla camp. It was January 1945. The U. S. Sixth Army had landed! The Americans had returned to the Philippines as promised. “I’m on my way to find them,” Margaret Utinsky announced. “Not yet,” the guerrilla leader replied. “It isn't safe. There are snipers all the way between here and the American troops. There isn't a chance to get through.” Margaret looked him in the eye. “I’m going,” she said. Margaret Utinsky was the determined woman who risked her life again and again to save the lives of hundreds of prisoners of war. This was the woman, who, when her capture was a sure thing, made her way into the hills and served for two years under constant attack as the only medical help available to wounded resistance fighters.
