The University of Notre Dame: A Portrait of Its History and Campus

The history of the University of Notre Dame began on a cold fall day in November 1842, when Father Edward Sorin and several brothers of the Congregation of Holy Cross first viewed the land on which they built, in less than two years, a preparatory high school, a vocational school, a religious novtiate, and a Catholic men's college. Of Father Sorin's original institution only the college is extant on campus, but the University of Notre Dame has since grown both physically and academically to become the preeminent Catholic institution of higher learning in the country. The author traces the growth and development of the University in a way that enables the reader to re-create and to understand Notre Dame as it appeared to the successive generations of people who have lived, studied, taught, and worked here. Filled with black and white photos and drawings.
