"There are very few books written by Indian authors on the subjects of Urban Transportation Planning and Public Transport planning and management. The present book is an attempt to fill in the gap. This book has been authored by an academician with vast teaching, research & consultancy experience and co-authored by a field executive with experience on rail and road project planning and management as well as some teaching and consultancy experience. The book covers basics of Urban Transport planning including demand forecasting; planning and management aspects of urban public transport, (both road and rail-based) and public transport system design including route planning in detail. _e problem of co-ordination between and integration of different modes of transport in a city and assessment and planning of parking needs have been covered comprehensively. Role of Para transit and non-motorized transport including walking on urban roads and the infrastructural requirements for same have been covered in detail. The book has briefly brought out the role of freight transport on urban roads and its planning process in a chapter devoted for same. The book concludes with a chapter dealing with recent innovations in different urban transport modes as well as on use of modern tools like wireless communication, GIS and GPS in traffic engineering and transport management."
