They are providing something that is needed in the community- therefore, they must seek funds to help pay for staffing, offices, materials- so they apply for grants. There are lots of different types of nonprofits and lots of different reasons nonprofits apply. People applying have to look at a grantor as a partner in their mission, and try to convince that partner to help them provide the needed service. That is the emotional part of the writing.
